Overview
The area above Irohazaka in Nikko City is called “Oku-Nikko,” and is an area with a condensed variety of environments. Located on the border between the Pacific Ocean climate and the Sea of Japan climate, the area ranges in altitude from approximately 900m to approximately 2,500m, and is home to lakes, waterfalls, rivers, forests, and vast wetlands. Various plants and animals that have adapted to their respective environments live and grow here. Many people visit every year, and it has become a place for a variety of natural experiences, including exploring seasonal flowers and autumn leaves, hiking, mountain climbing, waterfall tours, bird watching, and fly fishing.
The person who attempted to climb the unexplored Mt. Futara (Mt. Nantai) was Shodo Shonin, who was active from the late Nara period to the early Heian period, and Nikko Yumoto Onsen was opened in 788 (Enryaku 7). It began when it was discovered by Shodo Shonin. The hot spring was named Yakushi-yu (Ruri-yu), and new hot springs were discovered one after another, such as when Kobo Daishi Kukai opened Kanjizai-yu.
