Overview

Takachiho is a small rural town located in the mountainous area of northern Miyazaki Prefecture. However, Takachiho Gorge, a large valley with columnar joints carved deep into the earth, is a scenic spot that can be enjoyed both on foot and by boat. On the other hand, this place is also the “hometown of myths”, with two major sacred sites: the myth of the descent of the descendants of the descendants of the Tenson and the Iwato myth.

As you walk through the places associated with mythology, surrender to spiritual power, and be moved by the night kagura dances that the villagers have preserved and handed down, you will be reminded of the origins of Japan, where gods and people lived together.

Takachiho Gorge is a representative tourist destination in Takachiho. The unique topography is eye-catching, created by the flow of the Gokase River carving out the striated bedrock and columnar joints metamorphosed from the ejecta of Mt. Aso. Manai Falls, which cascades silently, has been widely known for a long time as one of Japan’s most beautiful landscapes.

Highlights

  • Trek to the world-famous Kuromidake

Itinerary

Arrive in Takachiho, a small mountain town steeped in Japanese mythology, and begin with a visit to Takachiho Shrine, where ancient cedar trees tower over a sacred space believed to have been founded over 1,900 years ago. In the evening, attend the nightly Kagura performance held within the shrine precincts, where local performers re-enact scenes from Japan's creation myths in a captivating ritual dance that has been passed down through generations. Settle into your guesthouse and enjoy the quiet mountain air after a day of deep cultural immersion.

Head out early to Takachiho Gorge, where the Gokase River has carved a dramatic ravine through columnar basalt formed by ancient eruptions of Mt. Aso. Rent a rowboat and glide beneath the towering rock walls to the base of Manai Falls, one of Japan's most beautiful waterfalls, which cascades gently into the emerald-green water above you. In the afternoon, hike the gorge walking trail for sweeping views from above, then visit Amanoiwato Shrine, the site of the famous myth of the sun goddess Amaterasu hiding in a cave and plunging the world into darkness.

Drive out to Kunimigaoka, a highland viewpoint that offers one of Japan's most celebrated sea-of-clouds vistas at dawn, with mountain peaks rising above a blanket of mist in the valleys below. Explore the rural countryside surrounding Takachiho, visiting small roadside shrines, traditional farmhouses, and local craft workshops preserving Miyazaki's artisan heritage. Before departing, stop at the Takachiho Winery to sample locally produced wine made from grapes grown on the volcanic soils of the highlands.
