Overview
There are neon streets that are filled with people, quiet streets with famous shops known only to those in the know, and even towns that still have movie theaters with a nostalgic atmosphere…You will meet people of all ages, men and women, and regardless of nationality. Also unique to Shinjuku at night.
The year after the shogunate was established in Edo in 1603, the Five Highways were established with Nihonbashi as the starting point. Each of the Tokaido, Nakasendo, Nikko Kaido, Oshu Kaido, and Koshu Kaido roads had a certain number of inns, and the inns were required to provide horses. The Koshu Kaido was the main road from Nihonbashi to Kofu, connecting Kofu to Shimosuwa on the Nakasendo.
The Koshu Highway had a long distance from Nihonbashi to the first post station, Takaido, making it difficult for travelers. Therefore, at the request of the head of the village, Kiroku Takamatsu, and others, the establishment of a post station in the middle of these areas was approved. This post station was called “Naito-Shinjuku” because it was located on a mansion that the Naito family had returned to the Shogunate, and because it meant a new inn, it was the origin of the place name Shinjuku.
